This is an important time of the year, jobs which are completed now will make a huge difference next summer, I'm not talking about closing the garden for winter, that is still weeks away. Just general plant care, noting bare patches, overgrown plants which needs cutting back into their space, generally ensuring things are where they should be. It's also a great time to buy another plant and find a space for it, this is my 3rd Gaura, I have fallen in love with them this year
I follow Dave_the_plantman on Instagram, he is very good with tips and plant identification. He suggested to remove the seed heads from agapanthus, something I have never done before, so I have cleared the seed heads from two areas and left the third. It does make sense as I always stop seed heads forming on my spring bulbs.
I have not managed to remove any more pots, I know I still have too many, this 4th heat wave is telling on how long it takes me to water the pots. I have no huge plans forming for next year, just a few tweaks, most of which we will sort in the coming months.
My flower beds are full of colour mainly zinnias and asters, the roses are having a second bloom, the fleabane daisies look good, I've cut them back a couple of times to keep them low. The forsythia is looking good after the move, I'm really pleased with my late summer garden, I'm not a fan of dahlias, so I'm always looking for different later flowering plants.
It's been another few lazy days, mainly with cloudy starts, which has helped to keep the temperatures lower and life bearable, later when the sunshine shines through it's nice to sit in the shade, our garden has become our perfect spot. Yesterday we had no sunshine, hopefully the heatwave is behind us.
All the watering has been hard work this year with the heat. Yesterday started off cooler and grey but by lunchtime it was back up to 25 degrees and really sunny again. We certainly can't moan about our Summer this year
ReplyDeleteThere's always something to do . . . or ignore! Our magnolias have flowered again and the kerria japonica is better now than it was in the spring.
ReplyDeleteWater crystals are very good for hanging baskets and big containers and plant pots. Adding lots of organic material helps plants retain moisture.
ReplyDeleteWhat would we do without our gardens? I love that water feature, how fortunate to get it on your local FB page.
ReplyDeleteIt was a lucky find.
DeleteI do like the look of your water feature :)
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Your water feature is lovely. I need to get out and cut down my columbines. Too late to cut off the seed heads as they have already formed. It just has been too hot to be outside as we have had heat warnings the last two days, and will have another tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I’d love to come to your garden! I spotted a Gaura, yesterday, at the local nursery and I was tempted!
ReplyDeleteYour water feature is lovely and to have the sound of running water in a garden, I think is a must. We’ve been looking for something for ages, with that in mind.
I can’t get over the second flush of roses! Mine have been better that the first flush! And like you, I’m not a huge Dahlia lover but I picked up four tubers in the spring and grew them in pots, just for fun. Hard work though as the slugs/ snails soon found their way.
We have loads of the Erigeron daisy and I’ve been chopping it back..and also taking cuttings. It’s a great addition to the garden and softens some of the old walls that we have.
It’s never ending, isn’t it? But all good fun! ๐
I never see gardening as a task, I took love your garden, they become our personalities, you are welcome here anytime, there is always homemade cake ๐
DeleteFor late summer/autumn how about chrysanthemum?
ReplyDeleteI've not grown them for years, its a good thought, thanks
DeleteI think I'll need to do some repotting in the garden, before long. And I definitely need to sort my herbs, as I think the mint might be dead after being neglected. X
ReplyDeleteI've only ever killed mint once, when it was totally waterlogged.
DeleteThere's always something to do in a garden to keep it looking good. I like your water feature, how fortunate to find it on Marketplace.
