Overshoot day

Today here in UK is our earth overshoot day, today we have used all the renewable resources our planet has which can be replaced within one year, we are on borrowed time. Below the wheel shows each countries dates, we are not alone, almost every country ignores this date.

Whilst we have slowed down the rate of usage, we are doing very little to reverse the situation, you can read more here.  It's very interesting, our earth can only give us so much.

I love this quote.

It's not Earth day, but the message it the right one, if we all did our bit.

I show these charts every year, there is far too much information on this subject to make a meaningful post, it's best if you want to know more to search overshoot day. This date has been monitored since the 70's and whilst the date is not any earlier each year, it is not moving back, for a very important date, very little is heard.

Most of my readers are like me, we don't waste, we don't over consume, we have left the commercial world, just turned our backs, the government aren't too involved because the taxes raised from our spending (VAT) is a huge income. Our parents had the right idea, purchase only what you need, use until it breaks and repair if possible.

  1. Maybe we will return to a 'make do and mend' way of life, though I don't hold out too much hope.

  2. I think one of the problems is that things can be bought much cheaper these days and people have more money than they used to do. Back in our parent's day, as you say, they had to make things last.

  3. I try to repurpose things in the veg plot and propagate my plants for free.

  4. Yes, thinking back my parents purchased only what they needed and did use it until it broke or it could be repaired.
Nowadays we live (too much) in a throw away world.

    All the best Jan

  5. I have never heard of this day before, and I am quite disgusted that I haven't. I really try and repurpose all those containers that I get from stores. and if I can't recycle them if possible.

    God bless.

  6. This is such an important message. Although, I've been noticing a gradual return to more mindful consumerism. Let's hope it continues. Xx

  7. I love that you remind us of Overshoot day every year. It is important to try to reduce consumption if we can. Whilst I'm not the perfect example of this, I do try to buy a lot of things second hand or just generally be resourceful where I can.

  8. I especially like that first quote as it sums up so much very simply.
