Popping these net bags over my strawberries is working, we shared the first berry to ripen, I check every few days to see if I need to bag more. On my tower which is six levels high, each level with 3 plants, it's going to be a bumper crop so I have left the bottom level for the wildlife, I'm happy to share. We will now get a small regular crop which taste way better than any from the supermarkets.
I got 2 packs of shallots, they were half price, I'm a couple weeks later in planting them, since we visited Cornwall and had such a lovely ploughman's lunch, we have been making them at home, and hubby eating pickled onions, so I suggested I would grow some to pickle at home. I also planted some parsnip seeds which started growing on wet kitchen towel.
I saw this begonia on our local pant market stall, just £4.50, it will go in the middle of the hosta tub I just love the colour, hubby got a salvia, with blue spikes for his front garden, he very kindly let me take cuttings, they root easy and I get plants for free.
I had very little to do on Wednesday, so I did more work on my 2023 blog book, for me it's a simple task, just very repetitive, each post becomes a page with text and photo's, my title and dates all have their font and sizes, you can see more here and here. I am way behind with these books, if I finish a year I will get it published, I have published more than I intended, but I do like to see our grandchildren included. We did walk to the village, it was market day, I got 2 pairs of long shorts for gardening, they were a great price.
I've not watched much of Chelsea flower show this year, it just does not interest me, I did watch the hour where they showed all the gold medal winners and the show overall winners, sadly all the gardens seam unreal to me, I feel the same about Gardeners World on TV and the magazine.
I'm having an off week, I'm not tired or ill, just lethargic and for no reason, it started on Monday morning, I woke up tired after a good nights sleep, and it has hung over me all week. I'm not crafting or reading much, just lazing about, maybe it's just what I need.
We are very pleased with Lilly, she has been using the cat flap to go out for over a week, but refusing to use it to come in, on Wednesday when it rained she used it for the first time, I gave her a treat, so she knows it a good thing, now she has her daytime freedom, for now we still lock the flap at night.
I wish there was an allotment gardening programme on television. Visiting different allotments every week and meeting the characters and ordinary every day veg growers like ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally with you there, so many garden medias are just about fashions and trends, I'm interested in good growing techniques, maybe you should start your own YouTube channel, there are some good ones already there, so you would fit in.
DeleteThere are some strange show gardens at Chelsea this year, I'm not really liking any of them.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried watching Beechgrove, much more real
ReplyDeleteI have watched it, I'm down on the south coast, so my season starts much earlier and there for they are always behind me for planting and most garden things.
DeleteSometimes you just have to give in and not force yourself to do things.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to getting back and seeing the difference in my plants. We have loads of strawberries on the allotment and I have a container at home, both had flowers and fruit starting when I came away 😋 I thunk we all have off weeks, I know I do, it's best to give in if you can. Hope you have a better week ahead
ReplyDeleteI love the plants you got from the market. Very pretty. I haven't watched anything of the Chelsea Flower Show either. I may try and watch a bit of it on catchup.
ReplyDeleteI so wish I could be out and planting, but here in the province that I live in it is still cold. It also rained for a number of days so things are pretty wet out there.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
We've just started picking our own strawberries, they're so delicious. I've really gone off Monty Don and Gardeners World in general, the only presenters I like are Carol Klein and Adam Frost, both much more down to earth. I've watched a couple of episodes of Chelsea, the one garden I like is the Japanese Tea Garden.
ReplyDeleteI too prefer Adam and Carol,
DeleteThat's good that Lilly is using the cat flap.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
I can't wait to start planting things. Typically, I don't dare to plant anything until almost June just in case there are any random spring freezes. That is so fun that you are going to pickle your own onions. I should try doing that some point. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHope some time out finds you restored and raring to go again. We were allowed time off when it’s what we need and we know when we need it.

I have not watched anything about Chelsea this year and I have only watched a couple Of Gardeners World programmes. It no longer seems to hold my interest like it used to do. Strawberries seem to be doing well this year for lots of us so I hope you enjoy a bumper crop.
ReplyDeleteD and I know what you mean about an 'off' week , we have those too. Hope you have a better week ahead.
