I fell back in love with tulips a couple years ago, I do grow them in tubs and love them, pops of colour. These were the first to flower and were new last year.
These were new this year and stunning.
I did not plant many bulbs last year, I have plans for a bigger display next spring, so far the wind has not caused too much damage, they are not playing to well, the flowers are popping up one at a time, so no big burst of colour here.
The tulips in this pot are blind again, not one flower bud, its a shame as they were lovely frilly colourful blooms, the giant snowdrops looked good and soon the fleabane daisies will flower, so all is not lost.
These are special and a few years old, all fake, I do love a display inside to cheer us.
In the past couple of years I have only purchased 'named' brands of bulbs mainly from garden centres, but it does not seam to make any difference, my failure rate is still high, especially in the second year blooms, I am aware tulips blooms often fail to return in following years, also often I get a completely different colour than on labels. This year I will purchase from a different suppliers, if you have any trusted sites please share them with me.
Daughter came with children on Sunday, Molly is a lot better still not eating or drinking much, she did join in playing with George, she has missed the start of the new school term, and will be off a few more days. She has suffered eczema, rashes and sore patches all her life, she can't have any traces of dairy products, she is still under hospital care trying to sort all her allergies. Thank you for your kind comments on my last post, it was scary to see her so poorly, it was the worse attack she has ever had.
We have a busy week ahead, so I'm resting when I can, not much to do in garden, the greenhouse is full, all doing well, I plan to sow more next week.
Glad to hear that Molly is starting to feel a bit better. We never have much luck with tulips either. We end up having to pretty much treat them as an annual 🙈. Though we did plant some in a pot last year that did well and this year each bulb seems to have produced more than one flower so that was a very pleasant surprise 😀
ReplyDeleteI've not had much success with tulips en masse but the odd one or two which faithfully pop up each year certainly make me smile. I had greater success at work but the soil was gritty and drained well and it was a sunnier site - so may be my heavy clay soil is not warm enough and stays too damp.

DeleteGlad Molly is on the mend. I've had tulips come back that are in the ground, but they are not as nice as the first year, I've got some in a tub coming back for the second time this year, they look ok so far. I bought mine from the Malvern Autumn show last year no idea what they are but I don't bother buying the expensive ones.
ReplyDeleteTulips are pretty much annuals down here, always have to be popped into the fridge for a few weeks before planting or they don’t flower! Glad to hear Molly is on the mend, very frightening. JennyP
ReplyDeleteI was hoping for great things from my tulips this year but many have rotted before blooming. After looking online it seems it could be a fungal disease or poor drainage. The tulips in the border do much better than those in pots. All is not lost though, some have done really well. I've just read your last post, I'm sorry to hear that Molly has been so poorly but glad she's now on the mend.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear Molly is recovering. I love tulips, we have lots in pots. Last year I ordered them online from a Dutch firm called Farmer Gracy, they've been lovely so far.
ReplyDeleteI am having the same problem as Jo above. I bought tulips last year and always go for the 'perennial' ones, but have only got one or at the most two in flower or even showing any growth in the pots I planted in the late autumn last year. Whether this is down to the wet winter or last year's hot temperatures, so that the bulbs were affected, I am not sure. Brown Sugar and Ballerina have proved perennial in the borders, but going forward, I think I shall treat tulips as annuals. Glad to hear Molly is improving - scary time for all.
